Forever Romance Summer Reading: June Edition Q and A with Jenny Holiday

Summer Q&A with Jenny Holiday

Favorite book set at the beach?

Jenny: Catch of the Day by Kristan Higgins. It’s not a resorty-beach area, but a small town on the water in Maine. I adore how the lobster fisherman hero is not just grumpy; he’s almost mute. But Higgins still makes us love him.

Is there a subgenre or trope that you have never written but would like to?

Jenny: Can I say ice-dancing romance? I’ve wanted to write the barely fictionalized Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir romance since the Olympics, but I know nothing about the actual context of the sport (or sports in general!).

What is your all-time favorite summer tune?

Jenny: I am going to date myself here, but REO Speedwagon’s “In My Dreams.” This was the song of the summer of one year in the late 1980s when I was in junior high. My best friend had a pool and we would play the radio on the boombox (still dating myself here!) and that song came on all the time. To this day, when I hear it, I’m back poolside with a stack of books, my best friend, and no cares.

What is your best summer memory?

Jenny: Just that feeling, in that sweet spot when you were old enough to be semi-independent but too young for a summer job, of school being out and the whole summer stretched before you. The liberation of responsibilities being lifted and escaping structure for a few months. My parents were teachers, so they were home, but they weren’t into scheduling us, so we just drifted between yard and library and pool and friends’ houses as our whims directed us. Divine.

If you could choose a vacation destination for the couple in your new book, where would it be and why?

Jenny: Wendy and Noah are actually pretty well-traveled (I can’t say more for fear of spoilers!), so I think I’d make them do a staycation. They’re also both workaholics, so I think staying home and taking it easy would be good for them.
